Stenosis

<< Back To Home

In a normal spine, nerves will exit the spinal column from different locations in the neck as well as the lower back. When these nerves become blocked or impinged they can lead to a condition called spinal stenosis.

Spinal stenosis cases usually occur in the lower back. Lumbar spinal stenosis can be a severe restriction of daily activities and can be very painful. Radiating pain or numbness in the legs, and sometimes in the feet, is common.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis include:

  • Burning
  • Tingling or shooting pain in the extremities or in the buttocks with bending or stooping forward
  • Numbness
  • Weakness

What is the cause of spinal stenosis? There are many causes, but aging is a common one. As a result of age degeneration in the facet joints in the lumbar spine, wear and tear on the joints and ligaments can shift into these spaces.

Treatments for spinal stenosis have been limited to over-the counter medication, rest, corticosteroid injections and typically provide temporary relief. A thorough examination will provide you with non-surgical and non medication options.
